Personal Injury Protection (PIP)

What is Personal Injury Protection? What does it cover?

Personal Injury Protection (PIP) is required in states with no-fault laws. In Texas, insurance agencies are required to offer you at least $2,500 in coverage.  You can either reject their offer in writing, accept their offer, or choose to purchase more coverage.

PIP is a type of medical payments insurance.  It covers medical care, lost wages, and replacement services for injured people (ex. daycare if parents are injured in an accident).  PIP pays, regardless of who is at fault.

What is not covered by Personal Injury Protection?

PIP does not cover expenses related to your vehicle.  It does not cover auto repairs.

How does PIP differ from Medical Payments Coverage?

PIP is similar to Medical Payments Coverage, but it offers a few more benefits.  PIP offers medical coverage in addition to 80% of the income you would have received while injured.  PIP also pays for care-giving expenses, so you an hire someone to care for you while you ar injured, if necessary.

When should I purchase Personal Injury Protection?

PIP is helpful because it is a broader form of medical payments insurance.  PIP protects you and your passengers.  PIP can also be helpful when used in conjunction with medical coverage on your auto insurance policy.
